Roanoke Island – Manteo, Wanchese & Pirate’s Cove

Considered by those who live there to be distinctly different areas, Manteo, Wanchese and Pirate’s Cove are on Roanoke Island, the site of The Lost Colony and the first English child born in the New World.  Wanchese is located on the south end of the island and life there focuses on commercial fishing.  Manteo is located on the north end of Roanoke Island, as is the home of Dare County Government offices. The downtown area with its waterfront boardwalk, restored homes, shops and restaurants is a destination in its own right.  Pirate’s Cove, with its deep water canals, marina and hosts an offshore fishing fleet and a very active tournament schedule.

Roanoke Island Life

This close-knit community offers a glimpse into a way of life that existed here long before the Outer Banks became such a well-known attraction.  People are friendly and helpful and there is a real feeling of community. The local families share ancestors, history, and anything their neighbor might need.  If you are fortunate enough to earn the respect and trust of these locals, you are lucky indeed!  A stroll around during Dare Days, a spring festival, the summer Farmer’s Market, or even the Christmas Parade will engender you to this charming way of life.  Ralph Lane, a leader of one of Sir Walter Raleigh’s Roanoke Voyages, described the area as “One of the Goodliest Land Under the Cope of Heaven” in a letter in 1585.  Visit and see if you agree!
