Hatteras Island

From the top of the new Oregon Inlet Bridge a clear view of the majesty of Hatteras Island greets us. This 50-mile ribbon of land separates the Atlantic Ocean from the Pamlico Sound and includes the villages of Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras.  Miles and miles of pristine, undeveloped beaches, the National Park Service’s Cape Hatteras National Seashore, join these villages. Four wheel drive access on the seashore beaches is allowed by permit giving surf fishing enthusiasts ample opportunity to find their sweet spot.

Hatteras Island Market Information

With primary home owners and resort home sales, Hatteras Island real estate has performed very well in 2019 with 268 residential sales.  Those sales numbered 12.51% of the total homes sales and the value of those transactions was $105.9 million, or 12.31% of the total volume.  The average price of those sold residential properties was $395,442.  These sleepy villages are favorites of many who are looking for a more remote, less commercial type of area.

Hatteras Island Community

The hearty souls who enjoy Hatteras Island life are appreciative of a less developed area that still offers essential services.  With mostly locally owned shops and grocery stores, with the exception of one chain food store, Hatteras Islanders rely on each other to a large extent.  Cape Hatteras School serves children from pre-K through high school and Dare County serves this area with a satellite office in Buxton.  People work on Hatteras Island to live there, a refreshing approach to life for many.
